October 2001
Our Queenly Breast Cancer Walk Adventure
Myself and new Queen Tammy WhyNot and I walked in the
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday, October
14, 2001 in Central Park, NYC.
I came fully prepared
for a Queenly day. I bought some white t-shirts with red,
white and blue World Trade Center designs on them, and
prettied them up with glitter and painted The Awe Idas on the
back in iridescent blue fabric paint. (Me doing fabric
painting is a sight to see, I'll tell ya!) I brought
waterproof tiaras for each of us to wear as well as pink
ribbons, Awe Idas buttons, sparkly dollar store shades and
some SPQ tattoos.
Our tiaras and sparkly shades
definitely got us noticed. As Tammy BJ said "Who'd a thunk a 3
dollar tiara could catch so much attention in New York City?"
The first cop we saw actually bowed to us. Lots of people said
"LOVE the tiaras, ladies."
We had our picture taken
with the Statue of Liberty who had come to the park for the
event. She then asked if she could wear one of our tiaras and
have her picture taken. Of course, we not only couldn't turn
her down, we also told her where she could get one of her own.
A couple from England also asked to have their picture taken
with us. We had a great time making spectacles of ourselves
and doing the "queenly wave thing" to lots of walk volunteers
and passersby. At one point, there was a double-decker
sightseeing bus that was stopped at a traffic light, and Tammy
BJ and I started waving to the people on the bus. Then they
all started waving back to us. Of course, we were lovin' every
minute of all this attention.
I brought along a
portable personal CD player with external speakers. For
walking music, we had The Blues Brothers (Peter Gunn seemed to
make an excellent Queenly starting tune), Cherry Poppin'
Daddies and of course, the Kacey Jones SPQ CD. Tammy WhyNot
caught onto those "I wannabe a wannabe" lyrics real fast, and
both of us were singin' it as we walked.
Believe it or
not, the port-a-potties being used for this event all came
from a company called, of all things, Royal Flush. So,
naturally, Tammy WhyNot and I had to ask someone to take our
picture as we posed on either side of the Royal Flush sign
that was on the side of the port-a-potty.
At the end
of the walk, everyone gets a goody bag, or so we thought.
Instead, the folks at the refreshment stand handed us about 5
or 6 goody bags each. We found a bench near the bandshell, and
proceeded to check out our "loot". Inside each bag was a
single serving package of new Special K cereal with
strawberries, an apple, a bag of potato chips, a packet of
Women's Nutrition hot cereal (maple sugar flavor), and, last
but not least little packages of either lemon essence or
orange essence PITTED PRUNES!!! OMG!!! We were ROFLOAO about
the prunes, and I am still not sure what I'm actually going to
DO with all of the prune samples that Tammy WhyNot so
generously let me keep, LOL!!! I tried them, and they tasted
pretty good, however, I think I have enough prunes to keep me
regular for a month or more!!!
We kept those tiaras on
even after the walk, while we went to a diner for lunch. I
even wore my tiara all the way home on the subway!
